May 26, 2023-Today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, joined by the Honourable Hedy Fry, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre, announced new measures to strengthen family reunification, including
- faster temporary resident visa (TRV) processing times for spousal applicants
- new and dedicated processing tools for spousal TRV applicants
- a new open work permit for spousal and family class applicants
- open work permit extensions for open work permit holders expiring between August 1 and the end of 2023
The measures include:
- Faster Processing for Temporary Resident Visas (TRV):
- Accelerated TRV processing times for spousal applicants to facilitate quicker family reunification.
- Implementation of new and dedicated processing tools for spousal TRV applicants.
- Open Work Permits:
- Introduction of a new open work permit for spousal and family class applicants, allowing them to seek employment in Canada.
- Open work permit extensions for current holders expiring between August 1 and the end of 2023, providing an additional 18 months of work permit validity.
- Timely Processing and Considerate Measures:
- Implementation of faster processing for most applications within 30 days, with specific considerations for spouses and dependents.
- Adoption of measures to support families waiting for permanent residence, with a notable 93% approval rate among applicants benefiting from the new tools.
- Work Permit Availability for Permanent Residence Applicants:
- Immediate availability of open work permits for spouses, partners, and dependents upon submission of a complete permanent residence application under the spouse or common-law partner in Canada class (SPCLC) or other family class programs.
These initiatives align with the Minister’s mandate to strengthen family reunification and facilitate temporary resident status for spouses, partners, and dependent children awaiting permanent residence. By addressing processing delays and providing additional work permit opportunities, Canada aims to prioritize family unity and contribute to filling labor shortages through immigration.
