Legislature<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dec 16, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/huddle.today\/author\/inda-intiar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inda Intiar<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gnb.ca\/legis\/bill\/pdf\/60\/1\/Bill-28.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bill 28<\/a>, proposed to the Legislature on Tuesday, seeks to amend the section of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canlii.org\/en\/nb\/laws\/stat\/snb-1979-c-m-21.01\/latest\/snb-1979-c-m-21.01.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Municipal Elections Act<\/a>&nbsp;that outlines who is allowed to vote to include permanent residents of Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, only Canadian citizens are allowed to vote for the three levels of government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Permanent residents or <a href=\"https:\/\/swallowimmigration.ca\/en\/new-brunswick-provincial-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">landed immigrants<\/a> have been given permanent status, unlike international students and temporary foreign workers.
